Protect personal items
Remove documents, photographs, jewellery, medication, keys and anything promised to family. Check pockets, drawers, tins, loft boxes and the backs of cupboards before general sorting starts.
Keep retained items in one locked room or vehicle. If several people are deciding, nominate one person to approve the collection pile before the crew begins.
Sort reuse before disposal
Clean, working items may be reusable, although upholstered furniture normally needs an intact fire-safety label. Donation collections depend on condition and capacity, so arrange them before the final day.
Keep electricals, metal, wood and ordinary contents distinct where practical. Separation makes the volume easier to assess and keeps reusable items away from damaged material.
Identify restricted items
Paint, chemicals, gas bottles, asbestos, clinical waste, batteries and unknown liquids need special handling. Do not hide them in mixed bags; photograph and describe them before booking.
Empty and defrost fridges and freezers. For sofas, beds and wardrobes, show both the item and its exit route so doorways and stairs can be planned.
Use a registered carrier
Photograph every room plus lofts, garages, sheds and gardens. Complete photos give a better volume estimate and reduce the chance of an unexpected additional load.
Check the waste carrier details and keep them. Eddy Leasing Limited holds upper-tier Environment Agency registration CBDU445737. Call 01249 569 570 for a Chippenham clearance quote.
